One titled “Brake Lights (On The L.A. Freeway)” is more representative of what Dvorak does most. “Well, cocaine and porn stars/Ain’t as fun as they sound,” Dvorak complains, in complete contrast to the freewheeling Hollywood party picture Mötley Crüe famously painted with its hair metal. Dvorak can only see lost souls and Los Angeles freeway traffic, and a culture keeping him away from his girl. Dvorak would rather be saluting heroes, like Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson, the way he does with “Brooklyn Twang.” The song’s title is a reference to his origins, Brooklyn, New York, but he sounds far more like his current hometown, Houston, TX.

Dvorak keeps it traditional throughout, although “Queen of the Rodeo” rocks out, even with its steel guitar, most aggressively. Dvorak closes the album with Tom Petty’s “Walls,” which – although beautifully done – is like salt in the wound at the Petty’s untimely passing. Sadly, this man with the admitted Brooklyn twang is so much twangier than most of what passes for contemporary country music.
