NPC Book Rap featuring Gloria J. Browne-Marshall and "The Voting Rights War"
The Voting Rights War examines voter laws posing challenges to American voters -- especially African-Americans -- from slavery through current controversies of voter suppression, including grandfather clauses, literacy tests, felony disenfranchisement and photo identification requirements. It focuses on the NAACP’s century-long struggle to achieve voting equality through efforts on the ground and in court, and the organization’s often contentious relationship with the Supreme Court. In a neighborhood engulfed in turmoil, Iran has enjoyed relative political stability of late. But have the rifts between state and society been reconciled? Has Iranian civil society resigned itself to incremental change within the confines of the Islamic Republic? How has the role of women in Iranian civil society evolved? Who are the most important change agents in Iranian society and what are their ambitions and motivations?

In its tenth year, Washington Ideas becomes The Atlantic Festival. Our new name pays homage to 161 years of award-winning journalism, analysis and storytelling, and captures the expansive nature of the event.
Through in-depth interviews with some of today’s biggest thinkers and leaders in technology, politics, business and the arts, we will illuminate new ideas, and grapple with the most consequential issues of our time.
From October 2 to 4, 2018, The Atlantic Festival will take over multiple blocks of Washington, D.C.’s Penn Quarter. Anchored by our “Ideas Stage” at Sidney Harman Hall, our downtown campus will feature book talks, networking receptions, breakout lunches, and much more.
Oct 3, 2018 -- Senator Graham at The Atlantic Festival
In this portion of the The Atlantic Festival, Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) talked about his role during the Trump administration. Much of Senator Graham’s remarks were focused on Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh, who the week prior had testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee about allegations he sexually assaulted Professor Christine Blasey Ford while the two were in high school. Senator Graham criticized Democrats' handling of the accusations, and defended Judge Kavanaugh, saying the nominee “is not Bill Cosby or Harvey Weinstein.”
Oct 3, 2018 -- Senator Harris at The Atlantic Festival
