House Democrats re-elect Nancy Pelosi as leader

House Democrats voted on their leader Wednesday and Nancy Pelosi prevailed, winning 134 to 63, despite the most serious challenge to her leadership she’s faced in recent years, from Rep. Tim Ryan:

After 14 undistinguished years in Congress, Ryan has appeared from the back bench — he literally sits in the last bench in the chamber — and forced Pelosi to fight for the top spot like never before. It’s prompted her to offer structural changes to leadership and more opportunity to the burgeoning crop of junior lawmakers who have never served in the majority.

Pelosi and Steny Hoyer and James Clyburn, who occupy the two leadership spots just below her, are all in their 70s. So there’s no doubt Democrats will need new, younger leadership in the next few cycles. But for the next two years, Pelosi will be leading the fight against Donald Trump and Paul Ryan—and it’s something she’s got a lot of experience at.
